After spending some time with my family camping we took a nice road trip to New Bern, NC to visit my old college roommate. Although he lived in the small town of New Bern, NC there was still plenty for us to see and do. Especially while he was off teaching, we went out beaching and at night we all went out drinking.

New Bern is the birthplace of Pepsi, and if you drive around you can see the Pepsi museum in the downtown area. Although we went a little bit of a different direction when checking out what to drink in New Bern. We first filled our bellies at MJ’s Raw Bar where we enjoyed delicious seafood to prep us for the night, I had jumbo shrimp that were about as big as I was. I can still taste them….MmMMmm

It's hard to see but if you look really hard you can see the dog

After the food we checked out a bar called TBM where two dogs were either visiting or regular customers. I’m not sure but the way that dog sat at that bar and ordered itself a drink, I’d say he was a regular (Sorry for the blurriness of the photo). Next we wandered off to the Harvey Mansion which has a quaint pub in the basement. This house was a stronghold during the Civil War and today it serves as a bed and breakfast upstairs and a Cheers like bar below. The only downside is that its NC and its a basement which means its hot. As you stumble around the downtown main street you’ll notice that their are bears everywhere…and they are dressed in funny outfits too. Supposedly New Bern is named after a Swiss town that means bear, which I can get but why that furry bastard has his tongue out all the time I’m not sure.

Another thing you may notice while downtown is the huge mansion. We found our way back downtown a different night to enjoy an amazing free concert at the Tryon Palace with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. They played over a dozen songs in a quick 1 hour tour around the world. The best part is that it was all free to enjoy, and listening to the soft sounds of the orchestra as I looked out the the water was enough to have me drifting off in a lullaby lull of happiness.

As for our daytime activities, we checked out the local stores and cuisine, North Carolinians like their BoJangles. Which to me seemed no more than a glorified KFC, although I guess in this case it would be NCFC. Either way the only thing that gave it any kind of quality was the sweet tea, but then again sweet tea is a southern thing and they do it right. Each sip took me back to my visit to New Orleans and that delicious tea goodness. When we weren’t eating and shopping we were lounging out at Atlantic Beach which is located about 20 minutes from New Bern. There is Indian Beach further down on one end and a military base on the other. I’m guessing there are a lot of bases in the area because it is filled with with soldiers or sailors or whatever they were. But back to the beach, well what can I say it was a nice clean beach, it had sand, oh and the ocean too. Compared to where I grew up, next to Lake Erie this was a vast improvement.

So if you ever find yourself down in New Bern, NC don’t go off and hibernate, go out, explore and have a beary good time. (OK no more bear puns I promise)

…..Something about honey @(^_^)@

Now there is camping and then there is family camping. Popping up your tent in the middle of the woods where you ponder life’s great questions like, “Does a bear shit in the woods?” Then there are the big campground places you go to with your family to get away from it all but not too far away so if your kids get bored, you know you can send them to the arcade or something. Well, I dare say Mohican country located in Ohio is the place to go. It is packed full of campgrounds that there is enough options for you to choose from. They have state parks and smaller campgrounds and every activity you can think of.

I have been going down to the Loudonville-Mohican area for about 10 years now and stayed in as well as visited a whole host of their campgrounds. I’ll be 100% honest, I’m not all about state parks. You don’t get a site with any trees and you can’t even bring your booze. Those two are a must when we go camping so we usually venture out to either River Run or Mohican Wilderness. Both campground offer fun Halloween weekend activities, I’ve heard that Mohican has improved theirs greatly. I remember going on a ghost tour where they handed the kids sticks with a nail in it, stuck a pop can with the top ripped off, wrapped a rag in there and poured in kerosene. As flaming liquid dripped down onto our arms we decided this wasn’t the best idea as we trekked up a large hill sloshing our fire torch o’ death. River run offers a DJ on certain holiday weekend nights which is great for your teens but if I have to listen to Cotton Eye Joe one more time I’m going to flip someones friggin tractor…and then I’ll start flinging poo.

What I enjoy about this area is that it is one of the best canoe/kayak places in Ohio. You can float on down for hours enjoying the great outdoors for what it truly is. My family would bring jello shots and toss it by as we pass, you know for our fuel to keep us going. That or we would pull over for a swig of Boones Farm, yeah we are classy like that.

Also, it wouldn’t be Mohican country if it didn’t have wonderful hiking trails and views to keep you busy for days. There is one lookout point that has to be breathtakingly beautiful in the fall (Just look at those rolling hills to the right). They also have zip lines, water parks, horseback riding and many more activities depending on how adventurous you are and how deep your wallet goes. Additionally, if you go into Loudonville they have a bunch of small shops and usually have town festivities during the holiday weekends as well.

However, my favorite thing about camping is sitting down with a good book and doing absolutely nothing. Then at night toasting marshmallows and serving up hobo-pies.

My tip if you do visit Mohican country during a holiday weekend, leave before 9am if you are leaving on the holiday (like Memorial Day) or stay an extra day because you will get stopped by every small town parade between there and home.

I did feel bad for the whole area this past Memorial Day weekend, they lost out on millions of dollars and set a bad tone for the kickoff to summer camping. The rains had overflooded the river and left many campgrounds underwater and the river flowing too high to allow canoeing. Campgrounds were calling campers who reserved telling them not to come. We lucked out and stayed above water this time but I hope that the improvement in the weather has shone down on them and campers since.

On my recent trip to North Carolina I decided to take photos on my drive home through Appalachia on my 12 hour ride. However, my camera decided to have a different plan. I wanted to set my camera to go off every minute to take photos of my ride home, care free. Well, the certain camera I have doesn’t let me do that so instead my wife volunteered to snap off photos on the drive. We didn’t get all 12 hours but we did get photos of our drive through Appalachia as we crossed through West Virginia, Virginia, and southern Ohio. We got well over 500 photos put together in this fun short video for you, hope you enjoy!

This past Friday, I headed on over to the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal building so that my friend @BouncyMcTigger could take the US Citizenship test, and while in Cleveland I thought it would be worthwhile to showcase a few favorites of mine to this soon to be citizen. Odd enough none of the citizenship test questions had anything about where to get good food and drinks at in Cleveland… I know weird huh? I grew up about 20 minutes west of Cleveland so I’m fairly familiar with Cleveland and decided to pick up where the citizenship test lacked…and onward we went with sites, bites and beer (sorry couldn’t think of anything alcohol related that ended in ‘ites’)

So what is there to do in Cleveland? Well right next to the Federal building and near the pier is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which lays right next to Great Lakes Science Center and Cleveland Brown’s Stadium. In fact you could spend a whole day at the first two and celebrate the afternoon at the latter. If you are a science geek or movie nerd you can explore the science center or its Omnimax theater which is really cool as you lean back and watch a movie on this jumbo dome shaped screen. If you want to rock out with your ummmm banana out then this R&R soundtrack is a little more Gene Simmons than Kenny G at the Rock Hall of Fame. Lastly, for you avid sports fans you can go down to the Dawg Pound and cheer on the Browns. The best part about all of this is that they are right next to each other.

We walked around and explored the sites, wanting to save money we opted out of exploring the interior and instead enjoyed the fresh air and great views. After our walk about we needed sustenance, we needed food, we needed Pho so we headed over to Superior Ave and prepared to feast on the delicacies of Superior Pho. Now to be 100% honest I am good friends of the owner’s son but trust me when I say that it is delicious. If you don’t believe me check out Adam Richman’s new book – America the Edible: A Hungry History, from Sea to Dining Sea, where he says “Every time I’m [in Cleveland], I love knowing these little teeny places: Chinatown, places on Mayfield Road, on St. Clair and Superior avenues. I love that to get to Superior Pho you have to turn off Superior, park, turn a corner and then walk through a building, past a nail place and through another restaurant to get the best bahn mi sandwich I’ve ever had anywhere. That’s impressive.” . If the Travel Channel isn’t enough to convince you then how about the Food Network channel’s Iron Chef Michael Symon, who is a Cleveland native and frequent visitor of Superior Pho.

We let them choose our dishes and out came three delicious plates of Phở đặc biệt , Com bò xào xả ớt, and bánh mì thịt. If you are like me you don’t know what any of that means or how to pronounce it. The Phở is a traditional Vietnamese soup dish that was big enough for me to swim in it, the Com bò was a rice dish with a spicy sauce and fresh vegetables for flavoring and the bánh mì was a delicious sandwhich with their signature pâté. Wash this all down with one of their bubble teas and you my friend are ready to walk around Cleveland to wear off that full belly feeling. It is tricky to find this restaurant but if you circle around E. 31st from Superior and pull into the back parking before you hit Payne Ave you will find a sign for Superior Pho that doesn’t make you walk through the mini strip mall in Asian Town.

In order to get our mind off our full bellies we walked around the West Side Market, no joking we explored a market full of food after overeating. This was a good thing because there is so much food in the West Side Market that you could spend a lifetime wandering and eating from each vendor here, we just explored and enjoyed the sites instead. This historic landmark has been around since the 1840′s and continues to be a source of great food and an exciting shopping experience. We picked up some juice from the Juice Garden stand for ourselves and some delicious chocolate peanut butter fudge and hot sausage jerky sticks as gifts for family. There are also a few delicious restaurants in the west side market that has some of the freshest food in the city. In case you want to get out of the market for a bite to eat I recommend eating at LeLoLai and enjoying a great Cuban sandwich on the other end of the block on W 25th. I had to be rolled across the street to check out the drinking side of W. 25th…that’s right the other side of the street features drinks.

Unfortunately for us, the rest of the business world doesn’t believe that 1pm is a great time to start drinking so as we wandered into an empty Bier Market we were told we were a tad bit early. I was a bit sad because they are known for their great Belgian beers. Though no need to fear my early riser lush, for around the corner their inlays the Great Lakes Brewery, where I sampled two beers for this weeks New Brew Tuesday Post, and they laugh at the thought of it being too early to drink. Although, Ohio law does have something to say about it being too late to drink, as if that makes any sense. There also happens to be the Market Avenue Wine Bar across the street, but they must be bed fellows with the Bier Market because they weren’t open yet. My recommended strategy is to spend the afternoon filling up on delicious sweets and treats and then test their absorbing power as you down a glass pass your gullet a few times throughout the night.

We tried to explore Tower City Center to walk, or better yet wobble, around and work off our full bellies but we had trouble finding parking and gave up for a nap at home instead. However if you find your way in the downtown area I recommend checking out Fat Fish Blue or Panini’s Bar and Grill for dining treats, the former is a Louisianan cuisine and the latter a great bar food sandwich. If for some reason you aren’t bulging from belly busters and have already thrown your belt away check out Cleveland’s Little Italy for some other great foodie treats.

If you are a foodie than Cleveland is the city for you to explore, and luckily with all that great food you need to wash it down, and Cleveland makes sure to give you the best of their beers and wines as options. I guess after being away from home for so long helped me to appreciate all the great options Cleveland provides right in my own back yard.

It was a dark and stormy night. It was a gray and a moderate climate night. It was friggin Halloween in Athens, Ohio and ghosts weren’t the only thing going bump in the night! What, it was cold you had to do something to stay warm.

This past weekend was Halloween, and purely for research purposes I went exploring and headed south to Athens, Ohio to see how this haunted city boogies down down with the boogie man. Athens is said to be one of the most haunted cities in the US, however nowadays Halloween is more about keeping up the ‘Top College Halloween Party School‘ namesake rather than a good ol’ fashioned spooking.

What is all the hype about, well when your city’s population doubles over night and almost as quickly staggers off after a weekend of boozing you are sure to garner some attention. This weekend Boo Fest has been in the making since 1974, and minus a few black marks on the permanent record has gone off without a hitch. So I, like any good traveler, went off and decided to explore what Athens had to offer. To be honest this was my second time there for Halloween so I sort of new what I was getting into, but then again you can never really tell when you factor in 20,000+ halloweeners. [hehe that sounds like....well you get the point ]

Photo taken from 'Athens Halloween Block Party Information Page' on Facebook (click image to be taken to the original)

Think what would happen if your typical Halloween party had sex with a block party, then you get the idea of what happens in Athens. The downtown streets are blocked off, but it wouldn’t matter because nothing would get through the downtown area anyways. They set up stages and have bands performing just in case you get bored of what’s happening in the bars. Most bars charge a cover charge to get in but you really don’t need to venture into the bars unless you want a drink. I bounced between a few bars and visited an old friend of mine, Goodfella’s Pizza. This delicious pizza joint sells pizza by the slice, a difficult thing to find in Ohio, but more than that the pizza comes in a scrumptious square slices of yumminess.

I wish I had pictures of my own but I brought my mini camera instead of my usual Nikon and well, forgot to charge the batteries but you can see some pictures located on the Athens News website. (I’m not so sure why the photo of the girl straddling her boyfriend in some random apartment is photo newsworthy but hey it’s a college party and they were trying to stay warm)

Twitter Profile for Goodfella's Pizza

Think of this as a spring break celebration for Halloween, because that is exactly what it is. Everyone is friendly, having a good time and slightly staggering drunk (which probably explains the first two). If it wasn’t a 4 hour drive I’d probably make this an annual occurrence, but this is definitely a must see event just wear comfortable shoes because you’re nudged up next to the Appalachian mountains and it is a hilly town to strut your stuff in those heels.

This past weekend I went to visit my cousin in Crown Point, Indiana, I know what you are thinking, “Indiana, what does that have to do with Chicago?” Well, as luck would have it he is only a train ride away from Chicago, seeing that the windy city borders Indiana. To make it more confusing along I94 you pass Michigan City which is in Indiana. Anyways, after a Friday night of boozing, reminiscing and relaxing after the drive we got up at the crack of noon to head out and explore.
OK, to be honest I was up bright eyed and bushy tailed before 8 am but after eating, stuffing our flasks with the choicest of alcohols (Hey, it’s expensive to drink in Chicago), and calling Verizon for my 3rd new phone (Stooopid Droid) because mine had decided to freeze up and die on me once again we were ready to explore, or so we thought…

Sign at Station that I read 40 kagillion times

Lesson 1: The Chicago trains do not run continuously ready to swoop you away at a whims notice.

Who knew? I figured it was a continuous running cycle, when you are riding the loop it doesn’t take long to catch the next train. But when you are waiting for the long rides into Chicago from outside the city these trains run every 30-60 minutes, which left us waiting in the cold for a good 40 mins before we caught a ride into town. To play it safe we picked up a schedule so we knew when to show up and catch a ride home, unfortunately the last train leaves before 1 which meant we would have to get our partying done early. Someone should have a talk with them and have at least one more train running after the bars close, come on mayor Richard Daley I think that’s reasonable.

Lesson 2: Chicago = Pizza

We visited Pizzaria Due, kitty corner to Pizzaria Uno but both are owned by the same company. I wanted deep dish pizza and remember hearing about Pizzaria Uno on TV, so I figured that was a good place to check out. Now I doubt this is the best place to eat pizza in the windy city, everyone has their favorite, but it was still good pizza and exactly what I was craving. What I liked about it was, while there was a 35 minute wait to be seated they took your order right then and there so by the time you were seated your pizza was ready. Plus they conveniently have a bar that you can sit and drink at while you wait, which for the sake of you the reader I suffered through I wish I would have had one of their delicious hot dogs but I was pretty stuffed for the night after the pizza, nor did I see any street carts along the way.

Lesson 3: The Navy Pier will Rock Your Socks Off

It all started when I was a baby monkey and my mom wouldn't let me play on the jungle gym

This was my first time exploring the Navy Pier and while the beer garden was dead and empty, I was more than a little heart broken, it still had plenty to do. There were rides, a haunted house, a wonderful view and plenty of places to shop, eat and drink. There is a giant macaroni that you can take a picture with, kids museums and shows and a huge Ferris wheel, I swear I would have rode it too but I spent my last loose dollars on the beer stand around the corner. I’m not sure what the open container laws are but after I bought my beer I strolled along enjoying my frosty goodness in my plastic cup, I wonder if it is similar to Savannah where as long as it was in a plastic cup you were OK?

Lesson 4: Wear comfortable shoes, or a stuffed wallet

Navy Pier, D4 pub and Brando's Speakeasy

We walked a lot throughout the day, but the walk to our final destination for the night took us on a 2 mile journey. We could have paid for a taxi but we had emptied our flasks and felt up to the challenge, plus there are always bars along the way right? Even more so than the liquor tantalizing our brains and boasting us capable, the bus ride to the pier costs us $6.50 a person (or monkey), which would have continued to cut into our ever diminishing beer funds. So we walked and visited an Irish Pub along the way, where I sampled a Chicago local beer called Metropolitan Krankshaft Kölsch, the beer wasn’t bad but the pub was far from Irish and the heat was cranking giving no need for your wooly Irish sweater here. After a drink or two we headed back on the road and off to a bar called Brando’s Speakeasy where my cousin knowing the karaoke DJ for the night led us to be introduced to the owner, who bought us a drink – I liked her! It being my birthday weekend I was offered a few free drinks and enjoyed a few of their martinis, which came in cool stainless steel martini classes, and I was conned into singing some karaoke. Piano Man it was, the ultimate fall back but being a ukulele playing monkey I prefer to give the rhythm not the vocals. Their lucky I was agreeable after all those martinis and shots otherwise I could have started flinging and breaking a few health code violations.

...That's Amore

In the end we stumbled off to the nearest train stop and got on a dark and scary pier before heading back towards a lit area and figuring out where we really needed to be. The ride home seemed long and uneventful, and only the promise of White Castle absorbing some of my alcohol when I got home kept me awake. It was a great weekend all in all, and for not having a plan we seemed to have made it a successful trip. The only thing I didn’t get to do that I wanted was to find a bodega that would sell Guaraná Antartica, my favorite Brazilian soda that seems to be impossible to find outside of large cities with a Brazilian population (Sadly this drink isn’t even available on Amazon). Not bad for a 25th birthday weekend in a strange city, but then again next weekend promises a Halloween celebration in one of the top Halloween college party places , Athens, Ohio at Ohio University.

…now what should I wear for a costume?

Since I’ve been sick all week I haven’t been a very good blogging monkey, so instead of writing about being stuck in bed I decided I’d rather show you pictures of my drive to and from work everyday. While I work and study towards my masters in education I don’t get to travel off as much as I would like. Yet sometimes I stop my car, step outside and take in the picturesque views that I get to enjoy almost every day I drive to work. I know there are a lot of other people out there that have worse off views, so I’m trying to be appreciative. With that thought, I’d figure I would share the photos that I’ve taken thus far since August. These all take place in Michigan but they are right on the Ohio-Michigan border as I drive back and forth across state lines each morning taking the back roads to work.

….but enough words, on with the pictures.

Albeit a sleepy adventure from my various vodka induced Minneapolis musings, I was ready to take on the road and head out to visit Chicago. The road however had a different plan for me that lead me away from my initial destination only to return a day later on the back of a tow truck.

As I drove down I94 sleep began to take over me, it was around a 7 hour drive to Chicago from Minneapolis and I was only about half way there. I already had a sleep induced mishap when I was traveling to Minneapolis, where a little gravel and not all my wits about me caused me to take a spill on an off ramp as I was headed to get gas. I was startled and slightly embarrassed as two gentleman came over to help me pick my bike back up, this is not something I wanted to repeat.

I’m not sure of all the things Wisconsin is known for but camp grounds should be one of them, that or the fact that Wisconsin Dells seems to be the prime Google search suggestion or better known as the water park mecca of the world could have helped. It was a sign, no literally a big sign that said Camp Grounds and then had like 20 names listed under it. So I veered off and searched for a place to call home for the night. Boondocking.org wasn’t coming up with any suggestions – that or I wasn’t doing it right but either way I was too exhausted to really care and found myself camped out near a bar which was a stop on a bike tour. I rested my head on the firm ground and listened to the roars of Harley’s and the sweet sounds of classic rock as I drifted off to sleep.

The next day I was fully charged and ready to take on the road again, that is until I got stuck at the Belvidere Oasis in Illinois. I started to come up onto the Illinois turnpike and needed to get some cash to pay the toll, so I decided to head off to this rest stop to eat and find an ATM. As I perused through this large fully stocked rest stop I checked every plug until I came across an available one to charge my phone with, ate my sandwich and then prepared to take off and hit the road. What I failed to realize was that my key hit the floor somewhere, I think.

As I strapped down my helmet and put my earplugs into place I went to grab my key, but couldn’t find it anywhere. After searching high and low, asking around, talking to maintenance and waiting for about an hour I gave up and called AAA. Boy, was I glad that I included my motorcycle before my trip because it definitely paid for itself by the end. I was towed the 71 miles to Cicero were I could store my bike for the day then intruded on my friends family dinner, as he put me up for the night. I stayed at his place in downtown Chicago, but spent little time there because I felt bad about having to be driven around to find a place that would make me a new key. After waiting around next to my bike, enjoying a few delicious snacks at a nearby Mexican restaurant and grocery store I finally had my new key. That is after I paid the man $75, which was all that was left after AAA covered the first $100.

I swung atop the bike said my many thanks and farewells and headed off towards Toledo, OH where I would spend the night until my final ride to my hometown of Lorain, OH where I could return the bike to my dad. Nearly 2000 miles later I was finally able to relax and recuperate, or so I thought. It was time to help out at the local festival – The Lorain International Festival and Bazaar, so that I could earn back some of the gas money spent on my trip.

The destinations weren’t what I had initially expected but the journey itself was more than I could have ever known. The people I met, the lessons I learned and the sights I saw as I rested atop 2 wheels completely exposed to the elements have given me more than I could have ever asked for. I could have spent my month of June many different ways but none better than what I experienced. I can only look forward towards future adventures and hope that the feelings and memories from this trip tide me over until the next.

While exploring Iowa City was exciting in a drunken stupor kind of way that only a college town can provide, I wanted to continue my travels the problem was after Iowa my plans ran out. This was that wing it point where I figured I’d stumble upon or just ride out and find my way along somewhere. I found myself going back and forth from Denver to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul but unsure where I wanted my journey to extend. If I headed out west the trip would have to be well calculated so that I made it back home by the end of June and while Minnesota was north I could circle back around and just make this a mid-west motorcycle trip and make it home in time to work a local festival putting some money back in my wallet.

Well, I ended up doing what any self respecting budget traveler would do, I went where there was a free couch to crash on. No, not Couch Surfer but through an organization I joined while in college. It was kind of weird at first strangers yet friends all in the same, linked through an organization and connected by a mutual friend. The funny part is that within the first hour I felt like I was hanging out with close friends I haven’t seen in a while, even though this was my first time in Minneapolis.

I was excited to learn more about this town, and while my travels favored Minneapolis over St. Paul the overall experience was a memorable one. At first my stay was only going to be a night, I didn’t want to overstay my welcome but ended up staying a few just out of the continual fun and overall great experience there, plus the threat of tornadoes pushing through Nebraska had me a wee bit worried. I honestly can say that after three days I contemplated my continued living in a smaller city and entertained the thought of venturing off to enjoy the perks of a bigger city. The Twin cities seemed to have all the perks of a big city with a limited amount of the problems, a balance that rested along the mighty Mississippi river that separated these two cities.

Have you ever watched some place on TV and think to yourself, I want to go there? Well I went there, I got to visit Matt’s Bar, home of the Jucy Lucy that’s been featured on the Travel Channel and Food Network various times for their perfection of this liquefied cheese oozing burger. I’ve made these at home and let me tell you, they don’t taste this good when you make it. The best part of this place is the “kitchen” it’s just a small grill at the end of the bar completely open and exposed barely enough room for the dreadlocks hippie guy serving up some delicious bites. This however wouldn’t be my only experience at some delicious dining, I also was able to visit Fogo De Chão a Brazilian churascaria or rodizio as I came to know them in Brazil. If you don’t know what this is, it is a steak house that gives you a card, when the green side faces up the waiters come by with various cuts of delicious steak, rib, chicken, etc. and slice off a piece on your plate and won’t stop serving you until you flip your card over. To top it off they give you a buffet and a few appetizers on your table, including grilled bananas!

I went out a few times to various bars and clubs and while I never had to pay a cover to get in to the places I visited they certainly got their money out of you. I paid $4.50 for a Budlight, yeah that’s a big difference from the $.75 I was paying in Jasper Indiana. During the day you can sober off and save your wallet any damage at lake Hiawatha Park which offers beautiful sights, beaches and plenty of things to keep you entertained.

I’m sure you’re thinking, “Wait, isn’t the Mall of America there?” and yes you would be correct but I never made it there. It’s not like I intentionally avoided it, but at the same time I wasn’t too excited to spend my time at a big mall. The only thing that got me sort of excited was the metro ride that I would have had to take from downtown to get there.

The whole trip wasn’t 100% fun in the sun though, my new found friend ‘Frio’ is not a beer drinker so after many shots of vodka after a few days the mornings were a little blurry, but that’s the downside of my job as a traveling drunken monkey, hehe. The other was that while driving around with my Egyptian friend we were pulled over by the police, the reason because he had one of those scented pine tree car fresheners hanging from his rear view mirror which is illegal in Minneapolis. Call it profiling or whatever but that was a minor speed bump while he was giving me a tour of the downtown. I wanted to fling poo at the officer to show him my kind of freshener but I didn’t want to get arrested on charges of assault under flinging on an officer hehe.

I found my way up to Iowa City, well okay actually I was staying in Coralville but whenever we ventured out to enjoy the town Iowa City was where it happened. I got to explore the university, help a friend move through bribes of beer and wine and enjoy a few visits to the Ped Mall which is not your ordinary mall. Who knew that after traveling through miles of corn you could stumble onto something other than a tractor.

The University of Iowa held a nice campus where some guy with mad frisbee skills hurled (or whatever it is you do with a frisbee) across a field not filled with corn and landed them between two goals. I guess he was practicing for a game called Frisbee golf, I must learn more of this game. There was also a building called a Pentacrest or so I was led to believe but Wikipedia sorted out why this four sided building was called the Pentacrest.

Where there are college students there must be bars, and the Ped Mall was the home for this little section of town. Along with some ‘local’ friends (both out of staters who must have never watched Children of the Corn) we ventured through this mall of sorts. We hit a country themed bar with sickles and saddles and other cowboyesque things on the wall and retro rockers staring down the 3 of us who obviously looked out of place. Cautionary note, I actually don’t get weird looks walking into bars believe it or not but that could be because I stand well below eye level. After a quick drink we headed out to a second floor hole in the wall bar called One Eyed Jake’s where the bartender informed us he just got fired. Seems they were closing the bar down and everyone was getting laid off at the end of the week. He took this news fairly well seeing that he was in a celebrate good times kind of mood because the shots started flowing for little or no cost and he matched us on every one. I hunkered down because I could tell this was a start of a good night, little did I know that it was the end! They close down the bars by 1:30 which means last call is at like 1:00 am, now I thought 2:15 in Ohio and Michigan was bad but this made me a sad little monkey.

I can’t speak on too many of the bars at this Ped Mall but from what I did explore It was all fun for me with plenty of options centrally located and barred off from under-age patrons on the weekends. On top of that there are food vendors who wait outside to help you soak up some of that alcohol.

I wish I could speak more about the town but it really is geared towards the college community and other than my exploration of the campus, the small down town and Corallville there was little to entertain me other than a fun night on the town.
