As I poured myself a glass I noticed a little trail of words that followed the label, and to my pleasant surprise this is what I read.

“Like Adam and Eve, Isaac and Ishmael, Mao and Confuscious, Good and Evil, Day and Night, Hittites and Visigoths, John and Lorena or Groucho and Moe, Ales and Lagers are as different as can be. Still we must love each for who they are, separately but equally, with liberty, and justice, for all. Cheers!”

To be honest I’m not a huge pils fanatic, it is a great style of beer but I’m slightly put off by the grassy taste. However I did enjoy this one, it had a nice mild flavor, which was surprising since it does have a high percentage of alcohol – but no lingering taste of it. The last thing you want is a grassy beer that taste only like alcohol.

The after taste has a trail of malt flavor that carries through that initial pils mild bitter taste. This brew wasn’t as strong as a typical Pils beer but it had a lot of subtle flavorings that I just couldn’t pick up enough to identify. It was a good beer and is very drinkable overall and is worth a try and may be a great introduction into Pils beer if you are unsure if you are a fan of the style or not.

I give this beer 3 out of 5 bananas, if you want a sturdy pils it make come off as a little light. On the other hand if you aren’t a huge pils fan or just want to try a nice smooth pils then this would be a good beer for you.

Type: Beer – Saison/Farmhouse Ale (Organic Beer)
Name: Brasserie Dupont’s Foret
Price: $5.99
Made: Tourpes, Belgium
Alc/Vol: 7.5%

This wonderful delicious beer tickled my taste buds to new levels – an organic delicious brew…who new?

I was suspicious of an organic beer and at first I assumed it was likely from California, no offense to the land of the former governator. Then I saw it, ‘Belgium’, and I got all sorts of excited and my tail started to wag. And yes dogs do that but we monkeys do not, so this is something special. Belgium is the land of beer, it’s my holy grail that I have not yet gorged myself on.

I popped the cork, yes cork, and took in a deep breath of lemon with similar scents that are more familiar with a pilsen. I filled up my glass to a golden orange color, slightly cloudy with a nice lacing head, although it was light.

I was getting excited from what I was seeing and smelling, and so I drank it in for all it was worth. OK I didn’t drink it all I sipped a few times to really get the flavoring but that doesn’t make for good writing now does it?

The beer had a crisp zest to it, while it is strong in alcohol it does not taste like it. It was blended perfectly, it is not overpowering but is not watered down either. Overall, just a really well made beer. I could see myself sipping on these all the time, well maybe more so in the summer seeing that it had a lemon spice to it, even though Saison beers are more of a winter style ale. Their was a nice mixture of spice with a slight bitter-dry finish that mellowed out the citrus taste.

Overall, I give this beer 4 1/2 out of 5 bananas. It is a bit pricey but then again most things that have the label ‘Organic’ do come with a heftier price tag. But this beer is worth your money even if it is just for a try.

Made: St. Peter’s Hall, Nr. Bungay, Suffolk, U.K.

As usual, before I start flinging my opinion let’s see what the beer has to say for itself…

SORGHAM BEER

Our beautiful flask-shaped oval bottle is a faithful copy of one produced c. 1770 for Thomas Gerrard of Gibbstown, just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. The original is now kept at St. Peter’s Hall and is a rare example of an oval Eighteenth  Century beer bottle.”

Efes Pilsen from EfesInternational.com

Name: Efes

Made: Turkey

This beer had no label on the bottle except for the little label placed on the neck of the bottle, smaller than the one shown from EffesInternational.com. However, while this no label bottle had an impression of its name it failed to leave a great impression on me.

This is another one of those forgettable beers, and as it is not a common one in the USA I doubt it will ever become memorable. The smell of honey is mixed in with the aroma, which may be the sweetness mixed into the flavor. The initial taste is strong but goes away fast, and I’m not sure what it all presents, it’s not bitter, or really hoppy nor really sweet its simply a pilsen beer of sorts. There is not really an after taste, but it does leave your mouth dry. There is a thickness to its mouth-feel but not creamy yet not light like I expected either.

After drinking Staropramen I was a little hesitant about drinking another beer from the Czech Republic, but then again this is ‘The’ pilsner beer, litterally. Any beer that claims pils, pilsner or pilsener however you want to fling it stem from this beer. Being the very first, and still going strong today as a popular style of beer with various versions of you know that they had to do something right.
