First off, try saying that name three times fast. I revert to Budweiser after a few too many drinks just because it is easy enough to say, “Bud” and wallah it appears but try to get me to say Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkelwhile sober is hard enough. I bought this beer for two reasons, the first is I recently spent a fun weekend getting drunkle with the Dunkel (although different brand) at the German American Fest. The second reason is that it was listed as being the world’s best beer (based on awards) and the world’s oldest brewery. I don’t mean that their Dunkel is the best, they had like 10 different beers and each one of them was an award winning champ on its own. This called for a taste test challenge.
This beer pours a frothy amber color with a cloudy hue. It gives a consistent thick tan colored head that laces on the glass. The thick head looks like it could hold a quarter atop – but I dare not try and stick a filthy quarter into this delicious looking brew.
The scent is light, although I have had a stuffed sniffer all this week. The taste, oh strap on the lederhosen and call me Jan (Yan), it is good. It has a rich malty taste with a presence of cloves and fruit – dare I say banana. They do say that Dunkels have a banana taste two them, some almost like a banana bread. I’m perfectly OK with that. It is like my two favorite things combined to create this delicious gift for my taste buds.
There is a lot of character to this beer but it isn’t a heavy drink, it is refreshing and light with the air of carbonation washing over my tongue. I do say that this beer didn’t let me down. I am sold, this is a delicious example of beer, a classic German style at that.
I give this beer 5 out of 5 bananas because it is banastic (Banana + Fantastic). What is your take?
