As we count down till our RTW adventure I recall the many happy weekends I spent in Buzios, Brazil. Buzios is a small town that is located about two hours north of Rio de Janeiro. This small peninsula is surrounded by beautiful beaches and a great, quaint small downtown.
When my friends and I would visit Buzios, the two girls loved it because shops would stay open late and the streets were safe for them to walk. I’ve been told that Buzios is were the locals of Rio de Janeiro – the Cariocas- will vacation here during the high season to get away from the crowds.
We would spend hours hanging out at a place called, The Mix Bar, drinking caipirinhas snacking on appetizers while a small band played in the corner. The back patio open onto the beach and allowed you to lazily drift off into the night as you watched the small fishing boats drift in the current.
There are some clubs there as well, that you can go dancing off into the night – but we tended to stay in the more calm bars and interact with the locals. Singing along to songs familiar only in rhythm, the sound of sand giving off a scratchy sound as it is samba’ed into the floor.
I went on my first and only date while living in Brazil at Buzios. We dined and walked the streets offering tourist trinkets in one store and the latest fashion in the next.
Buzios will always have a place in my heart as the softer side of Rio.
