The age old question for any traveler, ‘how should I pack my luggage.’ You are limited on what you can take with you due to weight and size restrictions not to mention the fact that they charge you for every single bag you own – who knows what’s next maybe for how many pockets you have stuffed with items. As the crafty penny saving traveler I’m sure you want to know how to get the most items into your bag without going over the weight or bursting the zipper – well fear not my furless friend for I am here to set the record straight.
item List Added in Day Bag
Deodarant
- 13″ Macbook + Charger
- Batteries + Charger
- Nikon Camera
- Toothbrush
- Face Wash
- Soap
- Notebook
To add a more thorough investigation we added multiple rectangular plastic organizers to hold the clothing to see if that made a difference between roll, roll w/ containers, fold or fold w/ containers. I was using my High Sierra Carry-On Wheeled Backpack that has a front end that zippers off to a day bag.
So what was my findings well Take a look at this handy dandy break down…
Clothing Comparison
Folding
| Fold Individual Guys - Underwear 8 - Socks 5 - Shirts 8 - Jeans 1 - PJ Pants 1 - Sweater 1 Girls - Bras 5 - Panties 5 - Socks 5 - Shirts 5 - Jeans 1 - Sweater 2 - PJ Pants 1
|
Fold With Containers
Container #1 - Bras 7 - W Socks 5 - M Socks 6 - M Underwear 2 - W Pantes 5 Container #2 - W Shirts 7 - M Sweater 1 - W Jeans 1 Container #3 - M Shirts 8 Container #4 - M Jeans 1 - W Sweater 1 - M Sweater 1 Container #5* - W PJ Pants 1 - M PJ Pants 1 - M Underwear 7 Items in #5 wouldn’t fit in container but did fit individually in empty spaces.

Rolling
| Roll Individual Guys - Underwear 7 - Socks 5 - Shirts 7 - Jeans 1 - PJ Pants 1 - Sweater 1 Girls - Bras 5 - Panties 5 - Socks 5 - Shirts 7 - Jeans 1 - Sweater 2 - PJ Pants 1

Roll With Containers
Container #1 - M Jeans 1 - M Sweater 1 - W Sweater 1 Container #2 - M Shirts 7 Container #3 - W PJ Pants 1 - M PJ Pants 1 - M Underwear 7 - M Shirt 1 Container #4 - W Shirts 7 - W Jeans 1 - W Sweater 1 Container #5* - Bras 7 - W Socks 5 - M Socks 6 - M Underwear 2 - W Panties 5 Items in #5 wouldn’t fit in container but did fit individually in empty spaces. |
Key: W = Women article of Clothing M= Men article of Clothing
The ending tally just based on number is
Fold – 48
Fold w/ Container -54
Roll -57
Roll w/ Container – 54
Roll wins but I think that if I had a more square shaped book-bag or was using luggage that the plastic containers would reach a higher number. But since my bag rounds off at the top there wasn’t enough room for the last container bag. I also like the idea of the container bag because it keeps things way more organized when traveling which if you need to get to something at the bottom might be worth sacrificing one or two items.
Everyone has their own way of packing, what’s yours? Are you a roller, folder, plastic container over organizer or just throw it in a laundry bag and hope it’s clean kind of traveler?

I'm seriously impressed with this post. Great comparison. I've been trying to figure out the best route myself. Great tips!

Thanks, I've had the idea for a while but setting a day aside to pack and unpack for times while keeping all the numbers took longer than planned. hehe

I love using bags to organize my clothes. I go to the dollar store………1000Won store here in Korea and buy the net laundry bags. They come in all different sizes and are cheap.

What kind of containers did you use, monkey?

Yup, it's a hassle to be over-organized at first but once you are on your trip knowing exactly where something is, is always helpful.

Just your basic plastic rectangular zip up bags not much bigger than me in size. Click here to see, it's the same picture as in the post but just so you can get a visual of what I used.
