5 Tips to a Successful Inexpensive Valentines Day

MonkeyLove Monkey Love

Ladies and gentlemen that special time of year is near and you are still scheming how to make this a memorable one with that special someone. That or you are just trying to find a way to get lucky. With high aspirations in mind the realization sinks in that your blog hasn’t been lucrative enough for you to go sailing on your personal yacht yet.  Fret not my furless friend for I have a few ideas that will get you from merely practicing to the big game, or at least some ranking points to get your closer to the title shot, with a low cost price tag. (Hey memorable romance and getting lucky can coincide) Before I begin, a side note is needed. I said ladies and gentleman, that’s right ladies can participate too. Valentines Day doesn’t have to be just about the guy creating romance out of thin air you too can use these ideas to get the fire started.

  1. Buy Travel Gear – Are you one of those #RTWsoon (http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23RTWsoon) hashtagers? Well if you and your loved one are planning on going on a big trip RTW or maybe just to break that cabin fever you probably need a few travel supplies anyways so why not just incorporate that into your Valentine’s gifts.  Has your special someone been talking about a real nice NorthFace jacket with a bagillion pockets that makes you a TSA agent’s nightmare, well maybe now is the time to get it.
  2. Matinee Movie & a Coffee Date – So shelling out $50+ for a movie and snacks at the theater while adding a dinner to it beforehand seems a little excessive, but you don’t have to completely take that option out. More often than not there are matinee features at a lower cost, and sometimes places like a grocery store (sometimes a Giant Eagle, Costco or Sam’s club) will sell tickets at a discount.  After your matinee movie go out to a local coffee shop and talk (I know sounds crazy huh). The whole movie you didn’t say a word to each other and now you have plenty to talk about: the movie, cold weather, coffee, monkeys, etc. you know the trendy topics.
  3. Home Hors D’oeuvres – Nothing says intimate more than a home cooked meal. Figure out their favorite dish or go with a classic romantic dish, Italian pasta (think Lady and the Tramp).  Purchase a simple yet elegant wine (If your sauce is red so is your wine and if you have an alfredo use a white wine) to be served with your meal. If you feel like going the extra mile you can bake a sweet desert all within a decent budget. Personally anything with a banana is a win in my book.
  4. At Home Spa Night – ok this is more for the already established couple, guys you might get slapped if you suggest this for a first date. Girls – well you probably won’t have any complaints from the guy but still not wholly recommended as a first date option. Go out to any store it doesn’t have to be a Bath & Body Works, search through the bathroom section and you will find all sorts of bath salts, bubbles, and smelly things that’ll make you say “Calgon take me away.” Kick up the Kenny G or something more soulful (You can never go wrong with the Isley Brothers) light a few candles and you’re good to go.
  5. Bed & Breakfast – Why go out to enjoy the comforts of a Bed & Breakfast only on vacations. You can do this locally in your own city or someplace nearby. See your own city through the eyes of a tourist and add the cozy comfort of a bed & breakfast and you’ll have a unique but memorable Valentines date.

Those of you without a significant other to share this wonderfully commercialized day with, don’t count out my suggestions. Take yourself out on a date, explore your culinary skills or let the smooth sounds of the Isley Brothers console you – there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to a special day. At least this way you know how the date is going to end.

I am loving the at home spa night and bed & breakfast idea! Unfortunately for me, Chinese New Year presides over Valentine's Day. I'll be dancing with dragons and screaming along with the fireworks.

I know, the automatic assumption is if you don't have a date then Valentines Day has to suck. I say take yourself on a date or even go out with a few friends and treat yourself to awesomeness.

Sounds like an awesome substitute to Valentines day! Although maybe you should see about adding some Monkeys, I mean dragons are cool too but you know Monkeys rock. You can always do the home spa night or bed & breakfast tonight or another weekend.
