The Life and Times of a Monkey on a Mission
Motorcycle Mishaps or Homecoming Hindrances
The long drive home is never as exciting as the initial drive to your destination, or at least I thought. Albeit a sleepy adventure from my various vodka induced Minneapolis musings, I was ready to take on the road and head out to visit Chicago. The road however had a different plan for me that lead me away from my initial destination only to return a day later on the back of a tow truck. As I ...
Twin City Travels
While exploring Iowa City was exciting in a drunken stupor kind of way that only a college town can provide, I wanted to continue my travels the problem was after Iowa my plans ran out. This was that wing it point where I figured I'd stumble upon or just ride out and find my way along somewhere. I found myself going back and forth from Denver to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul but unsu...
Field of Opportunities?
I found my way up to Iowa City, well okay actually I was staying in Coralville but whenever we ventured out to enjoy the town Iowa City was where it happened. I got to explore the university, help a friend move through bribes of beer and wine and enjoy a few visits to the Ped Mall which is not your ordinary mall. Who knew that after traveling through miles of corn you could stumble onto something ...
No Monkeying Around
While road trips are not an uncommon experience few have the privilege to enjoy the journey atop a motorcycle. The differences are subtle yet vast greatly at the same time. Completely exposed to the elements with no distractions I kind of picture myself as a modern cowmonkey (Not sure if cowboy would apply and cowmonkey sounds like a weird genetics experiment gone wrong but you get the point)....
Jasper the Friendly City
After my exciting wet ride I finally made it to Jasper, Indiana. Now I know what you are thinking, why of all places did I pick this one? Well my fur less friend, I had the chance to visit a friend I haven't seen in years. And while the location was in the middle of nowhere, the chance to visit friends is always worth the trip. What is there to do in Jasper? You ask. Well, not too much to ...

New Brew Tuesday – Altenmünster Maibock

Posted By: Cornelius Aesop on 2010/01/27 in Drinking, New Brew Tuesday - Comments: View Comments

Altenmunster MaibockLadies, gentlemen and primates welcome to a new installment where I attempt to put the ‘brew’ in MonkeyBrewster.com Starting today I will be showcasing a new drink every Tuesday rated by me. Technically wine and liquors are brewed as well so expect more than just beer because we monkeys don’t discriminate when it comes to drinks. So what makes me an expert in drinking, what that gives me the power to rate and place judgment on the elixir of life? Well, nothing-you just have to take my word for it and maybe try a few for yourself to compare the difference and then share your take on it.

I come from humble beer beginning where Natural Light was the household favorite. I know you just made that, what I like to call ‘EwWwWwww’ face – that’s OK I understand but we all have to start somewhere. Today I enjoy a slightly more refined taste, but I won’t pass down a free Natty. Some personal favorites are Guinness, George Killians Irish Red, Negra Modelo and Itaipava (served super chilled on a beach of course), but as I said there are too few beers I know to really say I have a refined taste.

The only true way to know beer (wine and liquor) is to drink them all. Since I am now an educated monkey on the ways of drinking who lived passed that special night in the USA when a young primate becomes of age and can slam down their ID at a bar and say such things as, “Beer me blazer.” Oh that special night where I did try to consume every beverage the world had to offer in a champ like bar crawl, I have learned from you. No, I will respectively space out my drinks to one a week, or at least my posts so it looks like I drink only one a week. New Brew Tuesday, yeah you wish you thought of it.

To be honest if you have a refined pallet for beer tasting try sites like Beer Advocate or Rate Beer which I can proudly state gave a similar rating of my first New Brew Tuesday choice of drink. I did learn this fact after I rated my beer so don’t get started on this monkey see monkey do crap up on your high and mighty human high horse. Yeah, that’s right you have to be on a horse to be high up because you can’t do it on your own without the help of an animal. Yet, I digress so without further ado…

Altenmunster MaibockName: Marke Altenmünster Maibock

Price: $7.99 (for the bottle not a six pack)

Made: Kempten, Germany

Alcohol: 7.5% Alc/Vol

The Maibock gave off a sweet almost honey like smell which I believe gave it its’ mild sweetness at first. The premature sweet taste gives way to a smooth dry bitterness a rich beer should have. I liked the label from one animal to another I can appreciate how awesome it must be to be immortalized on a beer bottle. If I were a nit picky monkey I would point out that the red stopper should have been green as well to add balance, but I’m not that shallow to mention such little details.

Overall I would have to give it 3.5 bananas out of 5. It is good, I can’t deny them that but for the cost I don’t know if it is worth purchasing over another typical German ale. There was nothing that stood out enough to warrant the fact that I could buy a six pack of something similar in flavor for close to the same price.

  • Excellent topic!

And Natty Ice is terrible. My go-to cheap beer is PBR.
  • I honestly don't know if I've ever tried PBR, you don't usually go out of your way to explore preference in cheap beer. If you find one you stick with it, but as for Natty Ice - I won't even touch that. lol
  • I like this brew tuesday idea!

I've never heard of today's beer. I think from your review that I may give one bottle a try if I come across it.
  • Thanks! Luckily I have a good selection of beers, wines and liquors to choose from at my local store to get me started. Also, this will be even more fun while traveling, exploring new drink, brands, and if I come across a special cultural tidbit that goes along with a certain drink I'll be sure to include that. Prost!
